This term has been a great mixture of experimenting new things, coming up with ideas and creating outcomes. I am happy with my final posters, I think they are in the best range of work I have created this year in Graphics. I have developed my skills in Photoshop, Indesign, drawing, photography and many other types of design. I think I have improved on taking a design further, I have taken themes and developed the colours, material and style of the first design to make it better. I have found a good way of working and trial and error is always useful. I am glad I got to focus on something special to me in this final project as it enticed me to find out more, this also helped me as I have been doing dance for over 15 years now and have connections in the industry. Many of my friends can dance, this helped me a lot with my photography. I feel that I used a range of skills in this project from drawing and sketching, computer skills, photography, and my graphic design skills have definitely improved. I based the festival in Paris as I have visited it recently, I have images in the beautiful City and it is a great location for a dance festival. Visiting different Cities during this project really inspired me, I went to Berlin and Paris. It was lovely to see the contrast and similarities with the art and to visit exhibitions of foreign artists. Artists and photographers who specifically influenced me for this project are: Robert Mapplethorpe (one of my favourite photographers), Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Patrick Mcgannon and Greg Gorman. Another general graphical influence is Steve Edge. I also found influence in books, performances, friends, fellow students and galleries.<br />
<br />
I think the project went well in terms of what I could produce with the time I was given. I worked hard on the posters and I experimented with my different photographs and different techniques on the computer and sketching as well. It was hard to find a poster that looked right for what I was going for. I wanted it to have class as well as look fun and interesting at the same time as being inviting. After many tries I think I found the best layout, colours and image put together for the festival that was in my mind. This made me better and noticing what is good together and what clashes in graphic design.<br />
<br />
I would have liked to do more on this project, if I had more time and money I would have focussed more on branding and made some dance related clothing and other merchandise. I also would have liked to make a short film of a performance, possibly of my choreography. Another idea was to make a model stage that would have been at the festival, where the dancers would have performed. If I were to do things differently I would have been quicker with choosing a final theme and been able to succeed in completing one of these more elaborate ideas. I also would have liked to have access to a more professional camera as my one takes good photographs but not to the professional standard that could be met with a more updated one. </div>

Coming towards the end of my foundation, I was to produce the most important piece of work so far. This required me to do lots of planning and think of all my options. As I had done lots of practice work on posters, I thought I could create a final poster on the computer using my Photoshop and InDesign skills. First it needed designing. I experimented again with colours and layout and came up with a logo that worked. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-00QmIH_zmpo/U39kGuxKdNI/AAAAAAAAAu8/r-fs8YqZNT0/s1600/MIXUPLOGO+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-00QmIH_zmpo/U39kGuxKdNI/AAAAAAAAAu8/r-fs8YqZNT0/s1600/MIXUPLOGO+copy.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With this logo I branded some of my best photographs that I had taken so far to see how it looked. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_WSNUeimpuw/U39kpqn7SnI/AAAAAAAAAvE/ezKdcjCUdsI/s1600/pic1j.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_WSNUeimpuw/U39kpqn7SnI/AAAAAAAAAvE/ezKdcjCUdsI/s1600/pic1j.jpg" height="400" width="282" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LdAI_z5EFsk/U39krr09LSI/AAAAAAAAAvM/iL3o89zjCmU/s1600/pic2k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LdAI_z5EFsk/U39krr09LSI/AAAAAAAAAvM/iL3o89zjCmU/s1600/pic2k.jpg" height="400" width="282" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sticking with this colour theme, I created one of my final posters on the computer, using my own image but altering it to be more eye-catching and bright. Experimenting with typography and shapes I came up with the poster that would be part of my final display. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oBgO0p_mT24/U39lgi-ztLI/AAAAAAAAAvU/erxUb5abm3Q/s1600/poster+copy1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oBgO0p_mT24/U39lgi-ztLI/AAAAAAAAAvU/erxUb5abm3Q/s1600/poster+copy1.jpg" height="640" width="452" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To support and compliment this poster, I thought of doing a different style and creating something that explained a bit more what the festival had to offer. I kept the same colours so the posters complimented each other and included other images I had taken to pursue the fun and bright theme of the festival.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dxAN8yN7oOg/U39mcOeed8I/AAAAAAAAAvg/pqXtQQiVcL8/s1600/mixupoffer+copy1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dxAN8yN7oOg/U39mcOeed8I/AAAAAAAAAvg/pqXtQQiVcL8/s1600/mixupoffer+copy1.jpg" height="212" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seen as it was a festival and there was to be merchandise, I would have liked to have the time and money to do more for example make t-shirts, costumes, mugs, stall signs etc. But I did have time to create a festival ticket on Photoshop and Indesign. This gives the viewer more of an idea of the reality of the festival. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5EO-Gb9EYZM/U39nJ6X8pDI/AAAAAAAAAvo/2LNQ9j9zJs4/s1600/mixupticket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5EO-Gb9EYZM/U39nJ6X8pDI/AAAAAAAAAvo/2LNQ9j9zJs4/s1600/mixupticket.jpg" height="368" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Starting to think of a final outcome of my project, I would like to think of ideas for a poster. This could mean many different things, based on dancing I thought of an idea to do a nightclub poster advertising a specific night themed on dance. Again I used a variation of different medias and tried out many different layouts, colours, images and themes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6x9y4yIg75o/U395pkbIfBI/AAAAAAAAAwg/r9tBH1_399Y/s1600/IMG_5147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6x9y4yIg75o/U395pkbIfBI/AAAAAAAAAwg/r9tBH1_399Y/s1600/IMG_5147.jpg" height="184" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ryIdnJLwGqE/U395q4JFDlI/AAAAAAAAAwo/ATlXgLjKnDk/s1600/IMG_5148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ryIdnJLwGqE/U395q4JFDlI/AAAAAAAAAwo/ATlXgLjKnDk/s1600/IMG_5148.jpg" height="194" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was inspired by a book based on the swinging sixties, this caused me to develop this idea into a 60's dance themed night, I continued to experiment with these ideas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lJtejWqtrKg/U395y1wYSbI/AAAAAAAAAww/wd4t-g1leq0/s1600/IMG_5149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lJtejWqtrKg/U395y1wYSbI/AAAAAAAAAww/wd4t-g1leq0/s1600/IMG_5149.JPG" height="320" width="198" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W-1uf5cGNy4/U3951hznkRI/AAAAAAAAAw4/-mZvlZFFWJ8/s1600/IMG_5150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W-1uf5cGNy4/U3951hznkRI/AAAAAAAAAw4/-mZvlZFFWJ8/s1600/IMG_5150.jpg" height="320" width="245" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Somehow this idea did not work very well with me as my photographs and the ideas in my head of dancing are more on a contemporary, professional side of dance. My next idea was to make up a dance festival, this seemed more relevant as it could include a range of dances. I did some research and discovered that this could be a good idea if I followed the theme correctly. I experimented some more with layout, colour, names, logos for my dance festival.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rEzxuIm6tbw/U395_gA_QII/AAAAAAAAAxE/WPK9oUcl8do/s1600/IMG_5151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rEzxuIm6tbw/U395_gA_QII/AAAAAAAAAxE/WPK9oUcl8do/s1600/IMG_5151.jpg" height="320" width="233" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fuo3QW7Q-Kg/U396DifNtmI/AAAAAAAAAxU/4yKwyVY9NZg/s1600/IMG_5152.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fuo3QW7Q-Kg/U396DifNtmI/AAAAAAAAAxU/4yKwyVY9NZg/s1600/IMG_5152.jpg" height="196" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I visited Paris for a few days to discover the City, I made the most of what the galleries and museums had to offer. I went to the Modern Art Museum where they display many pieces of work that inspired me. I loved the work of Matisse that was shown in the gallery. Feeling inspired I photographed my friends dancing around the Eiffel Tower, in the MAM and other recognisable locations around Paris. I came out with some great photographs, which I think I can take further in the project. With the mixture of me and my friends dance skills, I managed to take some great photos. </div>

For more experimentation, I have been creating dance shapes and positions using different medias. I have decided to focus on Branding, creating logos, posters and designs for a dance-related company. I enjoy experimenting with colours, pens, paint, stencils etc, to find the most eye-catching and relevant images, logos and icons. With inspiration from books, websites and people around me, i have found some great ways to depict dance. </div>

For research supporting my project, I looked into the history of dance and how it began and processed. This was really interesting for me as I have done dance for a long time, I found out lots of interesting facts. Here is what I discovered:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">Dance history is
difficult to access because dance does not often leave behind clearly
identifiable physical artifacts that last over millennia, such as stone tools,
hunting implements or cave paintings. It is not possible to say when dance
became part of human culture. It has certainly been an important part of
ceremony, rituals, celebrations and entertainment since before the birth of the
earliest human civilizations. Archaeology delivers traces of dance from
prehistoric times such as the 9000 year old Bhimbetka rock shelters paintings
in India, and Egyptian tomb paintings depicting dancing figures from 3300 BC.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">The origins of
the dances of Sri Lanka are dated back to the aboriginal tribes. The classical
dances of Sri Lanka (Kandyan dances) feature a highly developed system of tala
(rhythm), provided by cymbals called thalampataa. According to the legend, the
origins of the dance lies in an exorcism ritual known as the Kohomba Kankariya,
which was originally performed by Indian shamans who came to the island. The
Indian shamans came to the island upon the request of a king who was suffering
from a mysterious illness. The king was said to be suffering from a recurring
dream in which a leopard was directing its tongue towards the king, believed to
be as a black magic of "Kuweni" the first wife of the king
"Vijaya". After the performance of the Kohomba Kankariya the illness
vanished, and many natives adopted the dance. It was originally performed by
dancers who were identified as a separate caste under the Kandyan Fudel system.
They were aligned to the Temple of the Tooth and had a significant role to play
in the Dalada Perahera (procession) held each year by the temple. The dance
waned in popularity as the support for the dancers from the Kandyan kings ended
during the British period. It has now been revived and adapted for the stage,
and is Sri Lanka's primary cultural export.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">It is unlikely
that any human society (at any rate until the invention of puritanism) has
denied itself the excitement and pleasure of dancing. Like cave painting, the
first purpose of dance is probably ritual - appeasing a nature spirit or
accompanying a rite of passage. But losing oneself in rhythmic movement with
other people is an easy form of intoxication. Pleasure can never have been far
away. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">Rhythm,
indispensable in dancing, is also a basic element of music. It is natural to
beat out the rhythm of the dance with sticks. It is natural to accompany the
movement of the dance with rhythmic chanting. Dance and music begin as partners
in the service of ritual. This has continued through the centuries and is the
explanation of dance and music. Rhythm is part of dance and music. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">In most ancient
civilizations, dancing before the god is an important element in temple ritual.
In Egypt the priests and priestesses, accompanied by harps and pipes, perform
stately movements, which mime significant events in the story of a god, or
imitate cosmic patterns such as the rhythm of night and day. At Egyptian
funerals, women dance to express the grief of the mourners. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">Sacred occasions
in Greek shrines, such as the games at Olympia from the 8th century BC, are
inaugurated with dancing by the temple virgins. The choros is originally just a
dance, performed in a circle in honour of a god. In the 6th century it becomes
the centrepiece of Greek theatre. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">An early
manuscript describing dance is the Natya Shastra on which is based the modern
interpretation of classical Indian dance. In India the formalized hand
movements of the priestesses in Hindu temples are described in documents from
as early as the 1st century AD. Each precise gesture is of subtle significance.
A form of classical dance based upon them - known as Bharata Nhatyam - is still
performed by highly skilled practitioners today. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Light";">Natyashastra is
the most detail and elaborate of all treatises on dramatic criticism and acting
ever written in any language and is regarded as the oldest surviving text on
stagecraft in the world. Written by the great dramatist of ancient India,
Bharata, Natyashastra is reckoned as the poetics of Indian drama. Bharata muni
in his Natyashastra demonstrates every aspect of Indian drama whilst covering
areas like covers music, stage-design, make up, dance and virtually every
aspect of stagecraft. With its kaleidoscopic approach, with its wider scope
Natyashastra has offered a remarkable dimension to growth and development of
Indian classical music, dance, drama and art. Hence it is certainly not an
overstatement to say that Natyashastra indeed laid the cornerstone of the fine
arts in India. The commentaries on the Natyashastra are known, dating from the
sixth or seventh centuries.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

comes from watching one's friends prance about in spectacular costumes. The
English diarist John Evelyn sees Louis XIV dancing in Paris in 1651; he marvels
not so much at the dancing as at so many Sumptuously attired aristocrats.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

himself is genuinely interested in dancing, and in 1661 he decides that his
colleagues are not up to scratch. He brings together the best Parisian dancing
masters to form the Académie Royale de Danse, where his friends' skills may be
honed. It is so successful that he follows it in 1669 with a similar Académie
Royale de Musique. These two institutions are merged to form the Paris Opéra
(still in existence today). From 1672 professional dancers are trained. The
institution settles down into what is recognizably a ballet company. The first
director, Pierre Beauchamp, choreographs many ballet sequences with music by
Lully and others, and he devises his own system for recording the steps. He is
often credited with inventing the five classic positions for the feet, but more
probably he is merely the first to record them. A spectacular ballet by Lully
and Beauchamp is Le Triomphe de l'Amour, first performed in 1681 with Beauchamp
dancing Mars accompanied by ladies and gentlemen of the court. Four months
later the same ballet is performed again, in a public theatre, with a
significant innovation - professional female dancers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

the world "contemporary dance" referred to the movement of new
dancers who did not want to follow strict classical ballet and lyrical dance
forms, but instead wanted to explore the area of revolutionary unconventional
movements that were gathered from all dance styles of the world. Contemporary
dances therefore do not use fixed moves and instead try to develop totally new
forms and dynamics, such as quick oppositional moves, shifting alignments,
expressions of raw emotions, systematic breathing, dancing moves preformed in
non-standing positions (for example lying on the floor), and in general trying
to find the absolute limits of our human form and physique.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

refined the work that his colleague Martha Graham formed, and expanded with
this his own improvements, choreographies and avant-garde dance techniques.
During his long career he was regarded as one of the greatest creative forces
in American dance, education dozens of worldwide famous dancers and thousands
professional dancers who preserved his style until today. Merce Cunningham, initially
a student of Martha Graham, accompanied his dance in April 1944, with music
that was composed and performed by John Cage, who said that Cunningham's dance
"no longer relies on linear elements nor does it rely on a movement
towards and away from climax. As in abstract painting, it is assumed that an
element (a movement, a sound, a change of light) is in and of itself
expressive; what it communicates is in large part determined by the observer
themselves." Cunningham continued to showcase his work until 1953, when he
formed Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the Black Mountain College in North
Carolina. Cunningham is considered the first choreographer to "develop an
independent attitude towards modern dance" and defy the ideas that were established
by it.Cunningham made over one hundred and fifty works for his dance company
and his pieces have been incorporated into ballet and modern dance companies
internationally. He is an inspiration to those who enjoy contemporary dance or
those who want to follow in his footsteps.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

For the first week back from Easter, we collaborated with the LBM group to mix up working partners. We got into groups and were told to bring in a range of weird and random objects. The first day we experimented with these objects and crafted together some new weird and random objects. In my group we had such a large collection of random stuff that we all started making different things. We ended up with a person made of a balloon, a hairband and a couple of other random things, a chair made of balloons, glow sticks and paper, a table made of playing cards and some other objects. </div>

With these objects we decided to make a story based on this man. I brought in a kaleidoscope which became a focal point of the story. With all our creative minds collaborated together, we thought up a life for our character, Bernard. We wanted to make a documentary of Bernard therefore had to find a voice and film him. We recorded the voice of an interview with a maintenance man that worked at Ravensbourne and edited it to sound like just him talking. This sounded great and we needed footage to go with it. Using the program Stockmotion, we hired a camera, a green-screen and some other equipment to film Bernard in his natural surrounding. All of us working together, we managed to get moving footage of Bernard by moving him in between filming. He had a pet rabbit sponge which was a fun part of the story. After putting the footage and sound together we came up with about a minute of Bernard's voice and life. We put the video up on YouTube, the voice worked really well.</div>

For the Ravensbourne trip, we went to Berlin in Germany to discover the art and life of the city. We visited many inspiring places, which helped me with thinking of ideas to do with my final major project. A personal favourite Gallery we visited for me, had to be the photography museum. I love the photography side of Graphics and collected some information on useful artists and photographers to help me with my project on dance. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As well as the photography museum, I enjoyed the Modern art museum very much too. It had a range of new unique pieces, some of which I had never seen or heard of before. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We visited the parliament, in which is the highest part in Berlin. Walking up the spiral mirror building, we were told all about the sites, buildings and attractions of Berlin as we could see them from far. This was a great introduction as it made me feel more connected with the City. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We visited the Holocaust Museum, which told the stories of the Jewish and German sufferers that were included in the awful war. Outside the Museum was an installation based on the amount of people killed in the war. This was sad but beautiful and great work of art.</div>

After a lot of thought and discussion with the tutors and other students, I decided that doing a magazine would not be the best idea for me. This is because it does not allow for a selection of final pieces, in the final show I will have one thing to show. I think it would be better to get a range of things to show, therefore I am now basing my Final Major project on Dance. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this project I will explore dance in my own way. I will look in to the history of dance, do drawings, take photographs, look at artists and designers relevant to my theme. I want to also focus on the human body and form. I find this really interesting and I think s much can be done with this theme. I could make sculptures and use stockmotion or other programs to make short films. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have in mind already some photographers that relate to this theme, Robert Mapplethorpe and Bill Brandt are brilliant photographers that I can use as supporting work in my project, they will inspire my dance and movement progress.</div>

For my Final Major project I have decided to focus on a magazine. From the research I have done so far, I came up with my project proposal.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T-1BWQsaI1M/Uxc8pUqWGwI/AAAAAAAAAlI/3EE2QEltjNI/s1600/fmp+project+proposal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T-1BWQsaI1M/Uxc8pUqWGwI/AAAAAAAAAlI/3EE2QEltjNI/s1600/fmp+project+proposal.jpg" height="640" width="452" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Further research will require me to look into other graphic magazines such as 'Web Designer', Time magazine, DG magazine, Daze and Confused, Creative review, and many more.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

For the weather project, we were to think of something or someone that we saw or encountered everyday. It could be a scene or an object, I chose to first photograph my duvet in different shapes in the morning. Every day, I wake up and this is something I see first thing in the morning. It makes some unique shapes with the folds and bends of the material fabric. I made a contact sheet of these images and chose a couple of images that I could manipulate. I focussed on the flowing shapes that lead the eye. If one studies the images, many shapes, objects and animals can be created within it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I collected some images from the internet of animals that connect to the weather for example penguins because they live in a cold environment. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

The final project I decided to do out of the six is the alphabet of our own. This project required our intelligence and creativity to think of a new way to present the alphabet. I decided to use my photography skills again and photograph an alphabet out of hands as a shadow. Using these letters I created words such as my name with the shadow letters on the computer to show how they work as the alphabet.<br />

For the photography project as part of the 3 in 2, we were to pick a word and take a series of photographs based on hat particular word. I chose the word CONTACT. I worked with a range of objects and people, most images were not posed, though some were purposely designed to the theme. </div>

For the first choice of the six projects I chose to do the irony project. This entitled me to be creative and witty and think of brands and logos to alter on photoshop. At first, I decided to go for a big company that is seen multiple times in anyones daily life, Tesco. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_HdWhZX4LNc/UxSPWfWgQaI/AAAAAAAAAig/cWLF10J9eqs/s1600/tesco+taking+over.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_HdWhZX4LNc/UxSPWfWgQaI/AAAAAAAAAig/cWLF10J9eqs/s1600/tesco+taking+over.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Oj14QXCmBmQ/UxSPYKBP0XI/AAAAAAAAAio/wmpuqxVilFQ/s1600/tesco.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Oj14QXCmBmQ/UxSPYKBP0XI/AAAAAAAAAio/wmpuqxVilFQ/s1600/tesco.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r5rMXkBWsOo/UxSPZDnCpkI/AAAAAAAAAis/aa2KY7QG1Y8/s1600/tesco-ad-2013-46_460.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r5rMXkBWsOo/UxSPZDnCpkI/AAAAAAAAAis/aa2KY7QG1Y8/s1600/tesco-ad-2013-46_460.jpg" height="210" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then came up with another idea of manipulating tube signs in London, to represent what they really are. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For the next week, we extended the mapping project by taking another approach of translating data. With the choice of using the theme from the previous mapping project, we were to collect a range of data that was unique and had not been done before. We then made the data into a graphical piece displaying the information we collected. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Aiming for a personal approach, I decided to focus on my ipod and the music I listen to frequently. I collected some data of numbers and times that the music and lyrics came in. My final idea was to display the times before the lyrics came in, of the songs that I listen to most. To do this I went through a number of songs and wrote down the time in which the lyrics came in, then took a note of the first few words of the song. My final piece was displaying the time in the form of a line and writing the lyrics after. This idea finalised in a range of lines of different sizes, followed by limited words at the end. </div>

For the first week back from Christmas, we were given a brief to create a map in our own form. I chose to focus on a body map to create a unique map of my own. I started off by doing some research of body maps and rebelled against most of the maps I found, creating a whole new idea. I took some photographs based on some photographers I know of who focus on the body. Robert Mapplethorpe and Bill Brandt are examples of this. I took some photographs based on these photographers and edited them on photoshop. I then manipulated the photos by putting images of maps on top of the photos, I used relevant maps. One of my female models is from Cyprus therefore I placed a map of Cyprus on a photo of her body.</div>

For the chosen two week project I chose to do the branding project. We started off by deciding what food brand we wanted to make, I thought of a cuisine I liked and a food type that would be interesting for me to study into. I chose to do Italian cakes.<br />
I started off by researching Italian cake brands. I decided to focus on the logo to start off with, as i had recently done calligraphy I thought I'd experiment with that. I named my brand 'Through the Grapevine' and had another logo of 'Original Cakes from the Boot'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8-sYZbCM_Iw/UxDETycMdsI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/xkXKsFVvvnY/s1600/cake+logo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8-sYZbCM_Iw/UxDETycMdsI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/xkXKsFVvvnY/s1600/cake+logo1.jpg" height="276" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HPEBvzXKnr4/UxDEWrJw88I/AAAAAAAAAgY/bgNZfHzLhcc/s1600/throughthegrapevine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HPEBvzXKnr4/UxDEWrJw88I/AAAAAAAAAgY/bgNZfHzLhcc/s1600/throughthegrapevine.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I created a menu for my cakes of interesting and unique recipes with a main ingredient of grapes, an unusual choice that would attract people to try something that had never been done before.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With my logos I had created by hand and then edited on Photoshop, I got some images from the internet and printed the logos on the box images. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pgGGJuQsrBc/UxDFq1kyWpI/AAAAAAAAAgk/SpCc7lKbSrY/s1600/cakebox1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pgGGJuQsrBc/UxDFq1kyWpI/AAAAAAAAAgk/SpCc7lKbSrY/s1600/cakebox1.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then made my own boxes and printed the logos on them so I had a example in 3D. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />

In calligraphy, we worked with paint brushes and ink to create words and sentences in a calligraphic style. The flat head brushes worked the best in making the letters thicker at the bottom, in the traditional calligraphy style. We started off by writing the alphabet, capitals and lower case letters, with the paintbrush, this naturally causes the letters look like calligraphy. I then experimented with writing my name and various sentences to practice the writing style. The aim was then to create a bottle label for an alcoholic beverage. I decided to focus on a lager brand named 'Silly and Tone's Lager'. This was inspired by some of my relatives with these names that make lager in their home in Sussex. </div>

The next day we spent time playing with words. We were given an alphabet in different fonts and influence of a book of word plays. I created six boxes with different words hand done. This was then supporting work to creating an album cover of a made up band. I created a band called 'Cramped' with the album name 'A Delicate Flow'. With this idea, I created an image with the text on using both photoshop and inDesign. I then put it on a CD using these programs as well.<br />

Today we were concentrating on colour and illustrating text, we started off in the morning by creating a colour wheel of primary and secondary colours, moving on to doing colour charts. We then created our own illustrations with paint using only colours from one chart we creating. We did three of these illustrations to use three ranges of colours. For the text I was illustrating, I used a religious poem printed on glass, which is part of a collection of vintage projecting pieces I have recently been given. They are different religious texts and poems with beautiful patterns and detail surrounding them on glass lined with lead. I used the lyrics of each verse to inspire my paintings.<br />

This illustration is from a religious poem, this is the verse:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Smooth let it be or rough,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It will still be the best,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Winding or straight, it leads</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Right onward to Thy rest.</div>

On wednesday we were sent to the library and given a brief to look for books on subjects that we are interested in for degree. We were then to create a book cover for a book inspired by the already existing ones we found in the library. Out of the choice of themes given, I decided to do some research into packaging design as it is a field I am interested in studying further in. I found the packaging design section and had a look at some interesting books, I took into account how the covers were designed, front and back. We were given a template sheet to allow us to explore a range of ideas, I finally decided to do my book cover on tea packaging design. This is because I have always found some tea boxes and packets beautiful and it was inspired by a book I found on biscuit boxes.<br />
<br />
After some experimental designs, I ended up with this final design on paper.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Editing this on the computer, I came up with my final design of the book cover.</div>

Using these two programs, we were to make a movie poster for the film coming out in 2014 about the 33 miners who were stuck underground in 2010. It was to be shown on the tube like all the posters seen on the escalators. We searched the internet for photographs on the subject and picked the best one for a poster. I edited the photo in photoshop, cropping and changing the levels etc to make it look better for the poster. I decided to use a still taken from TV because I felt it had lots of meaning. This was the original photograph:</div>

The picture was pixilated as it had come from TV, I smoothed some of it out but left the obvious blur, this is because I like the honest, real effect it has on the poster, showing that the film is depicting a real story. After doing some research on movie posters and what makes the best ones, I put the edited photo in InDesign, added text and discovered some tricks from the program, I ended up with my movie poster. </div>

I recently visited the Tate Modern to see the exhibition on Mira Schendel's work. It was amazing to see how much variation she showed in her work from paintings to prints to installations, one of the main themes I noticed explicitly was the interesting use of shape and form. She was very in to simplicity of shape yet made it complex with material and visual display. There was much use of letters in her work, a specific favourite was the jumbled letters on paper hanging from the wall as a collection, complimenting each other in their placement. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also looking at her smaller work, she created some inspiring booklets showing type in different forms. She created shapes of letters and made words through pages. The way she put things together and experimented was very clever and relevant to typography of today. </div>

At first this was confusing as there was no official theme, the manifesto was to be 'personal'. It took me a while to think of a good idea and a detailed brainstorm in my sketchbook, but I came up with the theme of dance. I've been doing dance since I was four so I am quite familiar with it and it has become a common part of my life, I have always loved it which is why it is personal to me. The manifesto will simply encourage and inspire people to include themselves in dance more frequently, in any form.<br />
<br />
After some planning, I made a draft of the manifesto as a poster. At the end of the day we put everyone's draft posters/start to a poster together on the wall. Everyone took very different approaches and there was a large selection of ideas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-odf2xDI15-Q/Un5vIvFI_lI/AAAAAAAAAdk/sV-Yd4YwfOo/s1600/IMG_3325.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-odf2xDI15-Q/Un5vIvFI_lI/AAAAAAAAAdk/sV-Yd4YwfOo/s320/IMG_3325.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EQjUi3tYeeg/Un5vPT7fYiI/AAAAAAAAAds/TGelkHdrwtI/s1600/IMG_8451.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EQjUi3tYeeg/Un5vPT7fYiI/AAAAAAAAAds/TGelkHdrwtI/s320/IMG_8451.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LbBWZITVIe4/Un5vVx_0kzI/AAAAAAAAAd0/umbBBBrHOXA/s1600/IMG_8450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LbBWZITVIe4/Un5vVx_0kzI/AAAAAAAAAd0/umbBBBrHOXA/s320/IMG_8450.jpg" width="240" /></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I needed to make my manifesto less literal in explanation, it need to be more self explanatory and less detailed and all over the place. I produced a range of layout ideas in my sketchbook to find one that was right for the theme. I also took a series of photographs in movement of people in my dance class, in their natural environment. I experimented with placing these photos in and around the draft layouts.<br />
<br />
I decided what I was going to write and what photograph I was going to use. After trying out many fonts, I picked one that worked best with the poster.<br />
This is the photograph I picked for my manifesto before it was edited on photoshop. The image was done with my camera on very slow shutter speed to create a ghosty dynamic effect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oHXASbnuX2w/Un6B3AeDwoI/AAAAAAAAAeE/ZNvrhOJO-rk/s1600/IMG_4174.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oHXASbnuX2w/Un6B3AeDwoI/AAAAAAAAAeE/ZNvrhOJO-rk/s320/IMG_4174.JPG" width="310" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After some drafts I decided to do some more research on actual magazine covers. I like the look of the 'the gentlewoman' magazine because it concentrates more on the actual photography and subject matter rather than the title and graphics. Seen as the photograph is quite strong in itself I wanted to use minimal text so that it did not take away from the image. After editing it in Photoshop and InDesign, my final manifesto looked like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
